Sapatapur Mahavihar

Vihar: This Newar Buddhist Monastery, with its associated cult objects, is the focus of Buddhism in Patan. The monastery has developed out of an ancient Buddhist design, consisting of a two-storey building made up of open halls around a square courtyard. The Bahals typically consist of a Buddha shrine opposite to the entrance, and sometimes there is also a Ganesh or a Harati temple. The Newar Buddhist monasteries have at least one, and usually many, structures called Chaitya, which are the basic Buddhist cult objects depicting Buddhas on its four sides.
